Motoring & Amusements
As the country became more industrialized and technology advanced people were able to gain
new experiences and had more leisure time. Automobiles began to replace the horse and
buggy era. With that, such things as races and traveling became more commonplace. First,
we look at early horseless carriages, so light-weight looking they appear to be without
engines. Then scenes of the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup race. George Heath wins the race in a
90-horse-powered Panhard. The Glidden tours began with scenes of cars climbing Mount
Washington. Speed soon became king with cars designed to race car-style dynamics. The 1918
Maxwell is featured in a promotional film showing it covering rough terrain. The
4-cylinder model is used in this film. We move to entertainment with the advent of the
great amusement parks. Coney Island, Steeplechase Park with its mechanical horse race
rides, Luna Park with more than a million electric lights and Dreamland were constructed.
See the trapeze artists, the shoot-the-shoots, Beacon Tower at night and, for
fire-fighting fans, the staged fire and rescues of "Fighting the Flames" for
thrills. In addition to this, sights and personalities of the era. Horse-drawn trollies,
factories, 5th Avenue at Easter time, the first subway rush, a tennis match, a millenary
parade, high wire daredevils, hair style changes from long to the boyish "bob",
fast energetic dancing styles, and celebrities of the day are shown. Seen are Sarah
Bernhardt, John Bunny, Alexander Graham Bell, Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough riders,
Governor-elect Woodrow Wilson, Mme. Marie Curie and Thomas Edison. This was America at the
turn of the 20th Century as captured by early movie photographers.

THE HORSE
AND BUGGY ERA
This historical collection of rare newsreel footage captures the sights, styles,
technology and the people who made an impact on the 20th Century. Highlights include New
York steam elevated trains, Easter Parade on New York's 5th Avenue. A short promotional
film of the Spanish-American War Bond drive and an early whiskey advertisement film.
You'll see the Black Diamond Express passenger train, Tammany Halls Richard Croker, the
party boss. Rector's Restaurant with a gag chase through Central Park. The follies,
foibles and fashions of early America features nickelodeon film s of short duration that
reflect the technology and the styles of the late 1890's and early 1900's. Films include; "THE CORSET MODEL"
(1903), "A NIGHT AT
THE HAYMARKET THEATER" featuring dancing and
fights (1903), "FIRE IN A BURLESQUE
THEATER" (1904), a comic bit titled "AIRY FAIRY LILLIAN TRIES ON HER NEW CORSETS" (1905), "FROM SHOW GIRL TO BURLESQUE
QUEEN" (1903), "A BUSY DAY FOR CORSET MODELS" (1903) and "TROUBLES OF A
MANAGER OF A BURLESQUE SHOW" (1904). We
then move on to a look at transportation as we see horse drawn trolly cars and steam
powered cable cars which evolved into the electric powered New York Subway. Scenes include
Cortland & Fulton Street Ferries, Lower Broadway cable cars, Union Square old
Metropole Street railway, Madison Square, a sweep car for winter clearing, the Brooklyn
Bridge Railroad at Sands Street Station, the 9th Avenue Elevated, suicide curve, scenes of
construction of the first subway and footage of opening day with Mayor George B. McClellan
and other dignitaries. Scenes of rides through the lighted tunnels conclude this look at
America at the turn of the century.

BEYOND BENGAL 1934
The Harry Schenck expedition into Malaya is a fascinating look at early exploitation
cinema; this film is billed as a "graphic expeditionary film." It is evident
many of the scenes are staged for shock value; the animals, including 50 elephants, hunt
the men in this expedition. See capturing white gibbons, giant pythons waiting to attack,
and a native becoming prey. A Bengal tiger attacks natives and is shot dead 5 feet from
the fearless cameraman. Watch as a black leopard attacks. Next wild elephants (more than
400) stampede and attack natives in the water. Even the crocodiles attack the natives! One
would wonder why the animals continuously want to consume those in the expedition. Beyond
Bengal is quite different from animal films of today.

CONEY ISLAND VOL. 1
As a companion piece to MOTORING & AMUSEMENTS tape is this
collection of films on Coney Island. It was the greatest resort for a single days pleasure
in the world for more than a half century. It's attractions were a hurly-burly of rides,
freaks, elephants, food, fun and sand. Until 1920, transportation was difficult and
expensive which made a day at Coney Island a special occasion and one that was long
remembered. This tape presents many of the varied and delightful faces of the world's
greatest amusement park of its time. "CONEY
ISLAND" (1917) is a classic comedy starring Roscoe
"Fatty" Arbuckle and Buster Keaton. The entire comedy takes place in and around
Coney with its rides and attractions. The shoot-the-shoots provides some great sight gags!
"CANNED THRILLS" (1927)
is a short subject in which Grantland Rice provides a novel presentation of the thrills to
be had at Coney. "MEET ME AT CONEY ISLAND" (1930)
is an early sound film from the newsreels. "A DAY'S
OUTING" (1930) with Lew White at the organ we present a
sing-a-long, once very popular with theater audiences, about going to Coney. "SHORTY AT CONEY ISLAND" (1936)
is a novelty short about a chimp and his young master having a swinging time at Luna Park.

WORLD WAR 2 NEWSREELS
Vol. 1
This first edition along with the others is a collection of newsreels and government
sponsored information documentaries as they were at the time of release. There are no new
insights, no experts giving their evaluations or revisions of history. Just the short
films as they were made and seen during the period of time. Any remarks or slant given
represents those at the time these events were happening. Photographed by U.S. and
Canadian cameramen, these documentaries give a vivid and up close look at the heroic
sacrifices made in order to preserve our freedoms. "FURY
IN THE PACIFIC" is a leading example of contemporary historical
documentation of what was happening. Even then, some graphic scenes were included to
reinforce the losses and sacrifices made. "WHAT MAKES A
BATTLE?" is a portrait of the factors of war. Home-front industries
prepare armed forces for invasion of Marshalls. Air Force reconnaissance, Naval battles,
and land fighting are captured by cameramen. " D-DAY MINUS ONE" features the
101st Airborne, the 82nd, and the #9 Troop Carrier Command who were there at H hour the
day before the D-Day landing. American fighting men, troop carriers, paratroopers,

troops .In "VICTORY AT MIDWAY",
Jap ships are crippled or destroyed. Back in port, Admiral Nimitz bestows medals for

WORLD WAR 2 NEWSREELS
Vol 2
Even World War 2 required the use of persuasion on the part of the governments to their
people of what was happening and why. Each side felt they were just in cause. Each made
propaganda films. Some, factually oriented with appropriate graphics while others
distorted through the eyes of the totalitarian governments who produced them. From the
Allied side we see "LISTEN TO BRITAIN".
It's a remarkable portrait, without spoken words, only natural sounds of life in war-torn
London. With industry at work, people try and live some semblance of a normal life between
Nazi air raids. The entertainment of the music halls for the beleaguered but indomitable
British people is shown. This is a portrait of people enduring, sacrificing, pitching in
but never feeling sorry for themselves. "NEWS THRILLS
OF 1943" is a typical example of the way the public morale was kept
up by reports of victories by the Allies during the war. It assured us we were going to
prevail. Some events covered; Allied victory in Tunisia; Monty visited by Ike; the 8th
Army penetrates up the coast; Hill 609 is won; Mateur is won without a fight; civilians
greet soldiers; Brits take Tunis; captured jap films show enemy view of Pearl Harbor and
Corregidor. The narrators describe the "war lords of Tokyo" as this footage is
turned against them. April '42, the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet, flagship of a task
force lead by Admiral Halsey rolls through the seas on a combined Army & Navy mission
to bomb Japan! B-25 twin-engine bombers, lead by Jimmy Dolittle, are on the attack. "BLITZKRIEG" is a Nazi propaganda film
attempting to justify the war from their perspective. The Nazi soldiers are saluted as
"heroes of the mighty 3rd Reich". Finally, "A
LETTER FROM BATAAN" is a Hollywood-produced message film starring
Richard Arlen and Susan Hayward. The theme of this film was to emphasize the starving
soldiers and the evils of hoarding in addition to the waste of much needed raw materials.

return of General Eisenhower to the United States. Ticker-tape parades in New York and

WORLD WAR 2 NEWSREELS
Vol 4
This volume begins with "PEARL HARBOR BOMBED".
Up until the release of this newsreel, many of the guarded secrets of the attack had not
been released to the public as it was thought that public morale would be harmed and also
due to the fact that it wouldn't be wise to expose what had or had not been damaged. "NORMANDIE BURNS" The burning and
capsizing of giant French liner is seen by movie cameras. Sabotage is suspected! "YANKS INVADE MARSHALL ISLANDS"; The
largest U.S. Naval armada ever assembled symbolizes America's growing might as the Fourth

action is spectacular as flame throwers sear nests of Japs. Eight thousand are killed and
their grip on the central Pacific is smashed. "YANKS

sailing of the vast armada to the landing at Oran and the seizure of North Africa. "VICTORY OVER ROMMEL"; The start of Montgomery's
great Alamein offensive is seen as the famous Nazi General Erwin Rommel is driven from

PEARL HARBOR
REMEMBERED
That was the war cry. The United States entered World War 2 with a bang after the
treacherous, unprovoked attack that quiet Sunday morning. This presentation shows via
contemporary newsreels, how the news of what happened was controlled in it's release to
the public. Surprisingly, there is very little duplication of footage. First, a newsreel
released right after the attack which emphasized civilian loss. It also includes F.D.R.s
"day of infamy" speech. The next newsreel, released several months later,
reveals the aftermath of the attack on the military. Then, on December 8, 1942, one year
and one day later, the newsreel company was allowed to release their full coverage of the
attack. The year 1943 saw the release of John Ford's production of "DECEMBER 7th". It was the War Department's
record of what happened that day. Also included is a War Bond production, the chilling "THIS COULD BE AMERICA". It supposes
"what if the fighting were here instead of Japan?".

WARTOONS
During World War 2 the easiest doses of propaganda came from the animated cartoon. Viewed
today, some of these cartoon caricatures may seem extreme but they reflected the feeling
of every American then. After all, WE were bombed at Pearl Harbor. OUR ships were sunk in
the Atlantic. We trace the history of war cartoons, from the notorious Private Snafu,
Nipponews, Flashes From the Axis, satirical humor with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. Plus the
downright nasty Tokio Jokio.

SONGS AND STORIES OF WW 2
The medium is the message here as the public needed both encouragement through patriotic
songs as well as to be informed by movies as to how they can help their soldiers over seas

attained. "A LETTER FROM BATAAN"
(1943) with Richard Arlen, Susan Hayward, Jimmy Lydon and Joe Sawyer is a dramatic film

friend and family read his last letter. His "spirit" sits by at watches over
