. 1948   The Railroad Fair on Chicago's Lakefront in 1948 celebrated 100 years of railroad progress. WHEELS A-ROLLING is the Pageant Play of the fair, depicting transportation from 1673 to 1948.  The Iron Horse arrives in 1829, with locomotives Rocket, John Bull, and Tom Thumb to name a few.  As we travel through time, many vintage trains are shown.  See the Pioneer in 1848, the Pony Express, and hitting the golden spike when the Union and Central Pacific join their rails.  Famous trains, horse cars, fire engines, autos, and Burlington's Pioneer Zephyr all lead up to a giant steam locomotive and magnificent new diesel of 1948.We include two versions of the pageant, one produced for the Chicago Railroad Fair by Dudley Films, and another produced by John Ott.  Although similar in nature, there are enough different scenes and angles to warrant including both versions on this tape. Some home movies of the pageant are also included.

DANGER LIGHTS  1930 RKO
Louis Wolheim, Robert Armstrong, Jean Arthur, Hugh Herbert.
The plot concerns railroading on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, and the movie was largely filmed along that railroad's lines in Montana. The railway yard in Miles City, Montana was a primary setting, while rural scenes were shot along the railway line through Sixteen Mile Canyon, Montana. Additional footage was shot in Chicago, Illinois.
Louis Wolheim plays the boss of the railroad yard in Miles City, Montana. The film opens with a landslide across the tracks in Montana, and a repair crew is dispatched to clear the tracks. Several hobos are lounging nearby and are put to work helping the repair crew. One of the hobos, played by Robert Armstrong, is discovered to have been a former railroad engineer who lost his job due to insubordination. He is given a new job for the railroad in Miles City by the yard boss, but quickly falls in love with the boss's fiancée, played by Jean Arthur.Jealousy grows between the two over the affections of Arthur with both of them attempting to win her in marriage. Things come to a head during a fight in the railroad yard between the two, during which Wolheim is hit by a train and injured. To save his life, Armstrong must transport him in record time to Chicago for surgery.
"Danger Lights" features rare footage of a tug of war between two steam locomotives, actual documentary-like footage of the activities in the Miles City yard, and what is believed to be the only motion picture footage of a dynamometer car from the steam railroad era Beautifully filmed in several states, this feature film time capsule shows many aspects of the Milwaukee Road during this time.  Maintenance, astounding steam footage, and a railroad race across the Midwest at 100 miles per hour to save a dying railroad man.  Robert Armstrong (from King Kong) is the man at the throttle who ends up with the girl, Jean Arthur.

END OF THE LINE

A look back at vanished forms of transportation. "ANGELS FLIGHT" was a unique cable car in Los Angeles that went to the top of Bunker Hill. After 60 years of service the ride was still a nickel. "DESIGNED FROM THE INSIDE" is the story of how the C & O railroad with help from its employees redesigned their main repair shop at Huntington W. Va. You will see rows of steam engines in what was possibly their last overhaul. "THE END OF THE "EL" is about the 3rd Avenue Elevateds and their numbered days after 76 years of service. Pathe news covered the landmark on its last days. "DOUBLE DECK SWAN SONG" is next. It is 1952 and New York City is in the process of eliminating those old-fashioned double deck busses. As a bonus we've added "THE LAST NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD" which, unlike the previous forms of transportation, is still with us! It is the Silverton Railroad in Durango, Colorado.

ESCAPE FROM LIMBO; A Railroad MaN's NightMare
A seeming forgotten, different and unique safety film from the Pennsylvania Railroad, it's just as entertaining as any half hour television show from the 1950's. It has a solid story line instead of the usual safety speeches.
This is the tale of a fireman, Henry, who gets killed in a hunting accident and ends up in limbo where he is required to go out and collect the souls of other railroad men as they maim and kill themselves preferably with his help.
The screenplay includes action in the yard and on the high iron. Almost all types of accidents are depicted and they actually derail a locomotive for the movie. A forgotten gem about real railroad men, with real railroad men in the movie!
Bonus film; "REPORT TO AMERICA"
Another newly discovered railroad film from 1957. It has a fresh approach on the railroad problems of unfair competition. It presents not only the pro side of the railroads but the cons as well. A classic comment in the narration is "Old time railroad men hate the diesel engine with it's blaring horn"

The story of steam unfolds, and a glimpse of the museum primes you for phenomenal archival motion pictures taking you from a London corner in 1899 to switching yards, WWI troop trains, speeding steam and streamliners, including the Silver Jubilee Express and others, railway workshops, and dismantling the steam locos as Diesel takes over. An unusual musical rendition of British railroad history. PACIFIC 231 (1949) Winner of the Cannes Film Festival, this wondrous film captures the days of steam in France--the sights, the sounds, and the beauty of steam train 231 in non-stop action. THEM THAR TRAINS #1

Rare train safety films from the steam days. SAFETY IN RAILROADING from the Nickel Plate Road circa 1947. The story of Fred, a likable guy and a newcomer to railroading, and the seasoned old timer. Fred, it seems, is a bit careless, and some amusing mistakes lead to a tragedy when the mistake nearly costs him his life. The old timer shows how to get on a moving caboose, get off freight cars, how to step down between cars, how to get locomotives safely, both steam and diesel. Some great shots of trains of the period. SAFETY IN RAILROADING from the Missouri Pacific. Lots of trains, looking for moving cars, coupling with engines, steam locomotives, car crossings, near wrecks with 1930s cars, torpedoes, signals, and lots more. TROLLY TIMES

Here are five films from the 1920's through the 1950's. "GETTING ABOUT" is a 1934 in depth survey of the Detroit Street Railway system. Next is a newsreel, "THE NEW YORK ELEVATED" circa 1925 that includes a hair raising ride on the New York "El". "MANHATTEN" is a most unusual 1920's tour of that borough. It was a lovingly photographed essay with every shot taken from the "El" or has the "El" in every shot. "SAFE HIGHWAYS" is a zany production of the Chicago Surface Lines. It graphically show you that you should not drive around street cars in the roaring 20's! The classic "VANISHING EL" shows the waning days of Manhattan's Third Avenue Elevated when all of it's sisters were gone. A fitting conclusion to this tape of traction gems.
