SEAGOING THRILLS
This is an early Castle Films sports reel edited by Eugene Castle. Down through
the centuries, daring men have chartered sea lanes 'round the globe in their
never ending search for adventure. At Gloucester our voyage begins in the little
85 foot schooner "Wanderbird". San Francisco bound, around Cape Horn following
the course of the famous clipper ships of yesteryear. A veteran "tar" goes over
the side for a deep sea thrill, defying the sharks. Romantic Rio is just ahead.
Then, south as sea lions on the beach watch the ship pass. Whales, to the
starboard, challenge the ship to a race! But the sharks are the vicious bandits
of the sea, Cape Horn at last! In all their lives few men see this
thrilling sight! But the ship runs into a storm with wild winds and high seas
ahead. The brave skipper takes the helm and sees the crew through. Troll fishing
and a marlin takes the line. It puts up a tough fight but the line holds. Moving
northward near the California coast a colony of seals are encountered. Then,
land ahead! The Golden Gate Bridge is a great new beacon for mariners from all
the seas.

WATER SPORTS
This Columbia Pictures sports reel from 1935 opens with a Mississippi steam boat
race between "Tome Greene" and "Betsy Ann" way down South in Dixie.
These boats have been racing each other for the previous 70 years. Great detail
shots of the paddleboat as "Tom Greene" wins. Harold Vanderbilt on his white
hulled yacht and Sopwith on his black one, spent fortunes to get a thrill. The
winner to get the battered old mug called the "America's Cup". A gorgeous sight,
with mainsail
and jibs set and the crews hustling like mad. Playing polo in outboard motor
boats instead of on a pony's back! A dirigible balloon above pulls water
skiers who do stunts and tricks. Speedboat racers do tricks as well!

ATTENTION 8mm &
16mm Collectors! |
|
|
Do you remember the first movie you ever owned? It was probably a product of Castle Films. Before home video, Castle Films made every living room a screening room. For four decades the 16mm and 8mm film products of Castle Films were sold in every department store and hobby shop. Castle had big-screen movies for everybody: comedies with Abbott & Costello, The Marx Brothers, and W. C. Fields...monster movies with Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolfman...cartoons with Woody Woodpecker, Chilly Willy, and Mighty Mouse...westerns with Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, and James Stewart...travelogues of the world's picturesque places...newsreels of major headline stories...musicals with top singers and bandleaders. Collectors have always wanted a reference book detailing the total output of Castle Films. Here it is. Castle Films: A Hobbyist's Guide is a complete filmography of every title printed between 1937 and 1977. For handy reference, there are separate indexes by title, subject, and serial number, a listing of Castle's color film releases, and a special section "decoding" Castle's various pseudonym titles and disclosing the "true identities" of many films. Castle Films: A Hobbyist's Guide is a fascinating, nostalgic look at one of the pioneers of home entertainment.

Fatty and Mabel take
viewers on a tour of the 1515 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.
Attractions at that tine included the U.S. Battleship "Oregon" (which currently
would be banned from the city!), the Australian convict ship "Success" complete
with such punishment devices as a flogging rack and a spiked iron maiden (these
would be welcomed in San Francisco today! But not just for convicts. Fatty and
Mabel also tour and see the world's tallest flagpole, the Court of Abundance
(which Nancy Pelosi would immediately redistribute her way), the Court of the
Universe with sunken garden, and the Tower of Jewels. Fatty and Mabel also visit
Frisco's City Hall which was still under construction at the time accompanied by
then-Mayor James Rolph, Jr. Also appearing in this short film is opera star
Ernestine Schumann-Heink.
