THE AMERICAN LEGION PARADE
Here is a wonderful, 11 minute, black and white newsreel about the
American Legion parade in New York City and the events surrounding the 29th
annual convention, including Dwight D. Eisenhower's speech to the legionnaires.
You will see outrageous and wonderful floats including one that looks like the
USS Illinois (!) battleship, and a lot of steam engines or trains, plus clowns,
etc.
The American Legion is an organization of veterans of the United States armed
forces who served in wartime. The Organization was founded in 1919 by veterans
returning from Europe after World War I and is headquartered in Indianapolis,
Indiana. The group has millions of members..
In addition to organizing commemorative events and volunteer activities, the
American Legion is active in U.S. politics. While its primary political activity
is lobbying for the interests of veterans, including support for veterans
benefits such as pensions and the Veterans Affairs hospital system, it has also
been involved in more general
political issues, generally taking a conservative pro-America position.

THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN
The Luftwaffe's mass and indiscriminate bombing of Britain began on August 6,
1940 and continued unabated until mid-1941 when it ended abruptly. Despite the
determined British resistance that inflicted 2 to 1 air losses on the Luftwaffe
and convinced Hitler that the mass bombing was too costly; Nazi intelligence
failed to
perceive that British defenses were on the verge of breaking.
Supervised by Edmund Reek and narrated by Lowell Thomas, this is a collection of
Fox Movietone
newsreels. Loaded with spectacular footage of air bombers,
explosions., fires and combat, Movietone also show the graveyard of Nazi planes
turned back into
weapons against them. A helium balloon is destroyed in the air
in a fireball! London in ruins, the King as well as Winston Churchill tour the
wreckage. First pictures
of the
havoc in Coventry ! The House of Commons is
blasted in a savage attack on London! Churchill proclaims a fight to the end
against Hitler in his own eloquent

EIGHTY-SECOND AIRBORNE DIVISION
This is the saga of daring and courage of the 82nd Airborne Division which
became justly famous during World War 2 for its fine fighting traditions.
Calisthenics, rifle range, glider loading, practice jumps and crash landings were
all a part of the rigorous training for the 82nd Airborne. The 82nd
Airborne had its initiation in Sicily on July 1943. When the Germans were trying
to break up the Allied beachhead at Salerno in September of 1943, the 82nd
was sent in as shown in newsreel footage. The 82nd troops were the first
Americans to enter Naples on October 1, 1943. Through mud, mud, and more mud ---
the 82nd fought with the Fifth Army in Italy. The
division was then shipped
back
to the British Isles, except for one combat team which remained in the Anzio
Beachhead through four long months of agony in early
1944. Extensive
preparations were made for the BIG ONE --- going into Normandy just before
D-Day. On the night of June 5th, the 82nd, along with other airborne divisions,
American and British, moved out silently and swiftly. The mission was to disrupt
the German defenses and assist the amphibious landings on Utah Beach.
For 33
days the airborne divisions continued to
fight to help assure a firm Allied
foothold on the continent of Europe. Great actual action scenes of the battles.
On Sept. 17th the three airborne divisions were sent into Holland to establish it
as a jumping-off position for the drive to Berlin. The Dutch pitched in to help.
The offensive progressed well until the Allies reached the Nijmegen Bridge
across the lower Rhine. It took 3 days to secure the bridge as brutal movie
footage shows. Suddenly in Dec. 1944, the Germans struck without warning in a
major counteroffensive in the Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg. The
82nd was rushed
into help hold the Northern shoulder of what came to be known as
"The Bulge". In January, 1945, the Allies cracked the Siegfried Line. As the
offensive moved swiftly
toward Berlin, the 82nd returned to the Cologne area in
April and smashed across the Rhine in a raid that won a Presidential citation. On
May 3, 1945, the 82nd Airborne took 145,000 prisoners. The war was over! The
82nd participated in 7 campaigns, 7 river crossings, 4 combat jumps and 2 glider
landings. An all-American division fighting for the American way of life.

THE TRUE GLORY - Chapter 4 "The Liberation of Paris"
Photographed by combat cameramen of the United States, Canada, France, Poland,
Belgium, Netherlands, Czecho-Slovakia, Norway and Great Britain.
After a decisive breakthrough, the Allied Strategists moved swiftly. American
armor was to drive east and northeast to surround and take the German Caen
divisions
in the rear. But with characteristic speed, the enemy moved all
available armor and reserves from the Caen area hoping to cut behind our
breakout troops. A great force exploded toward Mortain and on August 7th the
enemy began a fierce counterattack. For six hours, non stop, the RAF pounded the
German armor heading west. Take-off, attack, land, re-fuel, re-arm and take-off
again! Allied plans moved forward. The U.S. 9th Air Force and the RAF destroyed
great numbers of enemy vehicles. Equipped with rocket-firing devices, the RAF
Typhoons made low flying attacks which were of vast assistance to the Allied
infantry. Thousands of Germans surrendered as they were caught in the gap which
the Allies were closing swiftly. Great aerial photography of these bombing raids
here! American tanks continued their rapid advance toward Paris and the upper
Seine. Before the advancing Allied troops, the Germans were fleeing helter
skelter in retreat along side the roads littered with their smoldering gear. A
well delineated map is a must
for a modern mechanized army traveling at high
speed. However, the Allies were moving so swiftly they kept going right off the
map! And still our tanks rolled on into the unscarred country. Finally, 10 tons
of maps had to be dropped by parachute to reach the advancing forces! In the
words of one French soldier, "We, in the LeClerc Division, were fighting in the
Normandy fields when suddenly the order came! Go to Paris, it said, ad take it".
The division started rushing the roads at 4 a.m. with the American Air Forces
protecting the skies. At the beginning of August, Paris was seized by rumors.
The one thing that could be confirmed was that the Germans were beginning to
leave
the city. When the free French forces inside Paris began staging their
uprisings, the Allies moved quickly to their support. French flags began to
appear at every window! General de Gaulle, as the symbol of French resistance
made a triumphant entry. On August 25th the German garrison commander in Paris
surrendered. The liberation of Paris had a great impact on people everywhere.
The enemy had lost 400,000 --captured, killed or wounded. Their material losses
were tremendous. But the German Army had not
yet reached the stage of mass
collapse.

THE TRUE GLORY - Chapter 7 "The Final Victory"
Photographed by combat cameramen of the United States, Canada, France, Poland,
Belgium, Netherlands, Czecho-Slovakia, Norway and Great Britain.
All during the Battle of the Bulge, Allied strategists continued their plans for
final offensive blows. After the Germans were effectively curbed in the bulge,
men and supplies moved rapidly toward the west bank of the Rhine. The Allied
drive for final victory was on! The air forces were waging an effective drive on
the east bank of
the Rhine. But
the Germans had blown many bridges before
retreating. When the assaulting Americans reached the river at Remagen on March
7th, they were amazed to find that the Ludendorff Bridge was still standing. By
March 9th, the Remagen bridgehead area had been enlarged until it was more than
three miles deep. In the North, Montgomery executed a brilliant assault on the
Rhine. Crossings were made by boat during the night of March 23rd. An airborne
attack followed the next morning.
The success of Montgomery's operation sealed
the fate of the enemy. Allied engineers quickly installed floating Treadway
bridges across the Rhine. One of our finest pieces of equipment, these bridges
were capable of sustaining tremendous military loads. Because of its great
industrial potential, the Ruhr pocket was the first big objective across the
Rhine. According to one American pilot. "We in the heavies sealed it off. Then
the ground forces wrapped it up". By April 1st, the Rhur was completely
surrounded and its garrison was trapped. Prisoners of war are rescued. Marching
deeper into Germany, many of our troops met hordes of displaced persons from
allover Europe. Ike, after seeing the horrors of concentration camps urges
an inquiry into Nazi brutality.

on raiding missions. Because of using so much fuel, the same group of fighters
could remain with the bombers only 25 to 40 minutes out of a 6-hour mission.
Coming and going, a thousand fighters might be needed to keep 40 to 100 bombers
on the job. The Luftwaffe was forewarned 1 1/2 hours in advance. Captured German
film shows how quickly their fighters got into action. The enemy had plenty of
time to mass their fighters at a chosen point of attack, and to outnumber our
fighters, often 10 to 1.Our fighters attacked courageously, 2 into 10, 6 into
50. They blocked the enemy's mass assaults until our victory columns soared at
