BLONDE BOMBSHELLS
This is technically not a musical soundie but a clip of famous platinum blondes
including Jean Harlow and Marilyn Monroe who sings "I Want to Be Loved By You"

phenomenon of platinum blondes starting with Harlow in a scene from "Public
Enemy" with James Cagney and narrates a brief revue of other famous blondes from
Mae West, Betty Grable to Kim Novak. The clip returns to Marilyn singing the
rest of her song.

DAMES
A Busby Berkley musical
starring Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, Joan Blondell, Zazu Pitts, Guy Kibee, Hugh
Herbert
Warners was heavily into the music publishing business as well as movies and
when they pushed a song, they really pushed it! Dick Powell sings "I Only Have
Eyes For You" which continues into an extravagant chorus line song and dance
number that lasts 11 minutes. The second number, running about 12 minutes, is
Powell's rendition of "Dames" with all the usual kaleidoscope-style Berkley
gimmicks and visual effects. If you don't have time to watch the entire musical,
this 23-minute highlights reel has the two biggest numbers to enjoy. A very
fine-grain, sharp dupe obviously taken from a quality original print of the
complete feature to showcase these two incredible numbers.

THE GREAT BIG SAW CAME NEARER AND NEARER
featuring Red River Dave (McEnery) with Cindy Walker
This may be one of the longest soundies titles ever from the most prolific
cowboy entertainer in soundies history (14 titles). Old time silent movie buffs
will get a kick out of this parody of the "Perils of Pauline" serial thrillers
of the mello drama days as the girl is tied to the infamous buzz saw in a lumber
factory while the villain bargains with her!

HOLIDAY INN
featuring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire
Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire star as a popular nightclub song-and-dance
team. When his heart is broken by his girlfriend, Crosby decides to retire
from the hustle-bustle of big city showbiz. He purchases a rustic New
England farm and converts it to an inn, which he opens to the public (floor
show and all) only on holidays. This barely logical plot device allows ample
space for a steady flow of holiday songs (including an incredible blackface
number in honor of Lincoln's Birthday) by Irving Berlin.. Oddly enough, the
most memorable song in the bunch, the Oscar-winning White Christmas, is not
offered as a production number but as a simple ballad sung by Bing to an
audience of one: leading lady, played by Marjorie Reynolds. Astaire's best
moment is his Fourth of July firecracker dance. Ah, but what about the plot?
Well, it seems that Astaire wants to make a film about Crosby's inn, starring
their mutual discovery Marjorie Reynolds. Bing briefly loses Reynolds to
Astaire, but wins her back during the filming of a musical number on a
Hollywood soundstage. As with most of Berlin's "portfolio" musicals of
the 1940s, the song highlights of "Holiday
Inn" are too numerous to mention. This delightful film is far superior
to its unofficial 1954 remake, "White Christmas". Plot synopsis courtesy

J
JOLSON SINGS AGAIN starring Larry Parks as Al Jolson
Columbia digest of the sequel to "The Jolson Story" picks up where the
original left off. Jolson's wife leaves him and he goes into a career slump
until he entertains the troops during W.W. 2. Various problems are highlighted
in this fictionalized story of the entertainer's life before he makes a
remarkable come-back. Columbia wisely gives most of the footage to his songs
which include; "Is It True What they Say About Dixie?", "For Me and My Gal",
"Back in Your Own Back Yard", "I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover", "Give My
Regards To Broadway", "I'm Just Wild About Harry", "Baby Face", "After You've

KOO KOO KORRESPONDENCE SKOOL
This title will blow out my spellcheck but that's the title! Jefferson MacNamer
was a popular newspaper cartoonist who enjoyed a brief career as the star of
some of these musical swing era comedies that basically featured him doing his
sketches of leggy girls and incorporating some musical numbers as well such as
one bouncy swing tune called "Me, Myself and I". Good swing era music
throughout. A TV station title has been added on to the start of the film and a
generic end title added as the film fades out. Other than a normal amount of
inconsequential splices, the print is in good shape for it's age. No major

1776 (1972)
featuring William Daniels, Howard Da Silva, Ken Howard and Blythe Danner
The first independent production of former studio mogul Jack L. Warner,
"1776" was adapted from the hit 1969 Broadway musical by Peter Stone and
Sherman Edwards. William Daniels, Howard Da Silva and Ken Howard are among
the many actors who recreate their Broadway roles. The story is set during
the first Continental Congress, when the Declaration of Independence was
drafted by such founding fathers as John Adams (played by Daniels) and
Benjamin Franklin (played by Da Silva).
Even if you are not a fan of musicals, this feature has a great deal of
charm and humor and much of the dialogue spoken by the founding fathers is
just as relevant today as it was over two centuries ago!
About the print; It is a nice, fine-grain flat version (not scope-adapted or
squeezed scope for those of you in Rio Linda). Color is excellent for
Eastman stock and shows no signs of fading. Some minor projection wear but
near start of reel, otherwise a good print for those who don't have a scope
lens and excellent for auditorium and class room use if high-def video is
not available.

ST. LOUIS BLUES
starring Bessie Smith
This is her only film appearance as the legendary blues singer sings the
classic W. C. Handy signature tune "St. Louis Blues" in what can only be
described as a two-reel jazz operetta. Set in an urban rooming house where
the chief occupation for men is dice game gambling, Bessie deals with her
lover when his faithlessness keeps rearing it's head (no pun intended).
Thinking he has come back to her she perks up but he merely needs money from
her then flees again. This simple story situation provides the atmosphere
and setting for Bessie to belt out the St. Louis Blues" as she was famous

STEPHEN FOSTER
HISTORICAL MUSIC SERIES
STEPHEN FOSTER'S OLD FOLKS AT HOME
Produced and directed by J. Richard Westen; Featuring Ken Darby and The
King's Men, with: Donn Reed (Stephen Foster), Joy Gwynell (Jane Foster),
Mary
Worth (Mrs. Foster), Fred Fox (Mr. Foster), Paul Theodore ( Morrison
Foster), Mary Martin (Mrs. O'Hara), Joe Weston (Mr. Firth), J. Courtland
Lytton
(Mr. Pond), Paul Arnold (Mr. Jackson).
This entertaining short subject is an episode from a rarely seen 12 part
series about America's first troubadour, Stephen Foster. Each entry presents
picturesque scenes from Foster's life as they relate to his timeless
compositions, interspersed with musical performances of his songs by the
male quartet, The King's Men.
Stephen Foster "discovers" the Swanee river and perpetuates it in this
moving melody as one of the most famous rivers of all time. The film touches
on Foster's decision to give minstrel impresario E. P. Christy the exclusive
right to premiere his compositions, going so far as to sell him the right to
be known as the author
of "Old Folks at Home" ("Swanee River"), a move Foster would forever regret.

The
Soundies Book

|
A Revised and
Expanded Guide
by
Scott MacGillivray & Ted Okuda
Book Description
"Soundies" were the granddaddies of music
videos: single-song musical movies that played in special jukeboxes during
the 1940s. Some of the biggest musical stars (and stars of the future)
appeared in these films: Louis Armstrong, Spike Jones, Liberace, Fats
Waller, Stan Kenton, Cab Calloway, and many others. Thanks to Soundies,
hundreds of unique musical performances were photographed for posterity.
These mini-musicals were originally nothing more than a ten-cent novelty.
Today, to film and music fans, they're a priceless part of history. |
Scott MacGillivray and Ted Okuda, authors of the
landmark resource book The Soundies Distributing Corporation of America, now
offer this revised and expanded guide to the Soundies musicals. This all-new
book picks up where the original left off: more than 1800 titles are classified
by performer, title, and date-many with new, individual annotations and all with
new cross-references for easy reading and consultation. There is also a
historical account of the prolific Soundies production companies, a look at
Soundies' many competitors and descendants (including telescriptions and
Scopitones), a checklist of the dozens of Soundies home-movie editions, and a
listing of alternate titles to help collectors
identify the films more easily. All in one handy volume: The Soundies Book.
About the Author(s)
Scott MacGillivray wrote Castle Films: A Hobbyist’s Guide, Laurel & Hardy: From
the Forties Forward, & (with Jan MacGillivray) Gloria Jean: A Little Bit of
Heaven. Ted Okuda wrote The Monogram Checklist, Charlie Chaplin at Keystone and
Essanay (with David Maska), and Chicago TV Horror Movie Shows (with Mark Yurkiw)
