ANGEL AND THE BADMAN
This was John Wayne's first independently-produced film made in 1946 after the War.
Perhaps reflecting the nation's fatigue at fighting and killing, this film takes a
pacifist tone as gun-slinger Wayne is nursed back to health following a gun-fight by a
Quaker girl and her family who try and show him that violence is not the only way of life.
An excellent action filled story with greater character development than most standard
westerns of the time. Also in the cast is Gail Russell, Harry Carey Sr., Bruce Cabot,
Irene Rich and Lee Dixon.

YAKIMA
CANUTT WESTERN FESTIVAL |
Yakima Canutt was the most innovative stunt performer and coordinator ever to
risk life and limb for the art of Hollywood illusion. Cheating death at every
turn, many of the tricks of the trade he first developed in the Westerns of the
silent era remain fixtures of the craft even today. Born Enos Edward Canutt on
November 29, 1895, in Colfax, WA, he began working on ranches while in his youth
and at the age of 17 signed on as a trick rider with a Wild West show, where he
ultimately won the title of Rodeo World Champion. Billing himself as Eddie
Canutt, "the Man From Yakima," in 1917 he met Hollywood cowboy star Tom Mix, who
recruited him as a stunt man. Quickly he became one of the leading fall guys in
the industry, with a knack for horse spills and wagon wrecks. Over and over
again, Canutt brought Western reelers to a rousing finale by doubling as the
hero as he leapt from his horse to tackle a villain attempting to flee from the
long arm of the law.

Turner , Wilbur McGaugh as 'Horse' Williams , Alys Murrell as Jennie

his granddaughter. But Horse Williams has the miner shot and uses the ore found
on Jess to accuse him of the murder. Jess escapes from the mob of townspeople
who later learn that the body of the supposedly dead miner has mysteriously
disappeared. 57 Minutes
THE IRON RIDER (1926) Directed by Jacques
Jaccard

Corey as Parson Larkin, Lee Sepulveda as 'Knife' Morgan, Alfred Hewston as
'Flash' Clayton and Nelson McDowell as the Drunk Boy .... Yak's horse
After he loses his money and horse in a poker game, Yak learns he was cheated.
But then he learns that the men that cheated him are wanted and have a price on
their heads. This gives him a chance to get his money back and more, so he sets
out after them. 61 Minutes

COVERED WAGON (1925) Director James Cruze revived the western genre and presented audiences with the first western epic in the spectacular 1923 feature "THE COVERED WAGON" chronicling the largest wagon train to ever cross the valley of the Platte River. The film takes place in 1848, when two wagon trains - one led by Jesse Wingate (Charles Ogle), the other by Will Banion played by J. Warren Kerrigan, as they travel from Kansas City, over the Oregon Trail, to destinations in California and Oregon. As the wagons make their way over the tortuous trail, many obstacles are encountered — the crossing of the Platte River, an Indian attack, and a prairie fire. On the way to California, human stories unfold — the most prominent of which revolves around Will and Molly Wingate (Lois Wilson). Molly's fiancé, Sam Woodhull, played by Alan Hale, Sr., out to discredit Will, succeeds in having Will and his wagons banished from the train and head off to the California gold fields. By that point, Molly has fallen in love with Will and sends Jackson (Ernest Torrence) to find him. NO MAN'S LAW (1927)
Oliver Hardy gets a rare opportunity to play a straight villain who is really nasty,
murderous, and evil in this feature length western from 1927. Teamed with fellow villain
Theodore Von Eltz, they attempt to over-take a mine stake of Jimmy Finlayson and his
nubile daughter Barbara Kent. They are out on the desert where there is no law but that of
the gun. Von Eltz is clearly the "good-bad guy" and Oliver Hardy is clearly the
"bad-bad guy" with no redeeming features. The tension builds as both men have
their eyes set on killing the old man and having their way with the girl. "Rex"
the King of the Wild Horses (if he's wild then who named him Rex?) has a prominent part in
the story out-come. Like Rin Tin Tin, things should have turned out for the worse if not
for the noble animal's presence. Shot on location, this out-door adventure holds up quite
well with the western adventures produced by the major studios of the time. Seeing Oliver
Hardy play what is essentially a straight villain part is quite a contrast from his
lovable comic persona. Unfortunately several of his other straight western dramatic parts
made at Fox Studios in the mid-twenties with such stars as Buck Jones are unavailable for
viewing and are probably lost films. This one surviving film gives us an idea of how
Oliver Hardy might have fared as a character actor had he not teamed with Stan Laurel.

times over the years. This version is slated more towards older viewers rather than the
children's matinee.

DANIEL BOONE and FREMONT THE TRAILBLAZER (1955, 1956)
The TV series that never made it. Can you figure out why?
DAN'L BOONE Bruce Bennett plays the famed frontiersman, with Lon
Chaney Jr. as the Shawnee Chief "Blackfish." Daniel is in the middle of an
Indian uprising caused by crooked white men. He proves his worth by running
through rows of tomahawk-wielding Indians. The chief and Daniel become friends
when he saves the Chief's son. Action abounds, for peace can come to Doonsboro
only if the treacherous traitor is found.
FREMONT THE TRAILBLAZER Follow the exploits
of the explorer where "from the ashes of his campfire have sprung cities."
Fremont (Steve Cochran) leaves a beautiful woman (Barbara Wilson) to record
trails of land seen only by Mountain Men. Kit Carson (James Gavin) helps guide
Fremont through untamed wilderness where they find Soo Indians, a viciously
slaughtered scout left to warn those who proceed, and an endless desert. This
is just a sampling of the adventure Fremont and Kit encounter on their ongoing
adventure.
